Project Overview
Dunton Environmental was appointed by Wates Group to remediate the site for Brook Mead Academy in Leicester — a new SEN school for over 1,200 children, delivered under the DfE Framework.
The chosen site was a former Brick Works, which brought heavy contamination and complex ecology issues that had to be carefully managed before construction could begin.

Size

3 Hectares
Recycled Materials

circa 30,000m³ segregated and carted away
Completion Time

26 Weeks
The Problem
As a former Brick Works, the site carried contamination from its industrial past alongside complex ecology that needed careful handling. Existing hardstanding and topsoil also had to be segregated before removal.
Challenges Faced
- Site contamination due to its former industrial use
- Complex ecology issues requiring careful management
- Existing hardstanding and topsoil needing segregating before removal
The Solution
Dunton stripped and prepared the site, then used a combination of ground improvement and water-management techniques to create a stable, compliant platform ready for the new school.
Techniques Used
- Site strip — topsoil removal and breakout of hardstanding, plus tree and shrub clearance
- Stabilisation & Roller Dynamic Compaction — to improve CBRs and enhance soil strength and stability
- Prefabricated retaining walls — installed to address specific site level requirements
- Attenuation tanks — installed to manage storm water runoff effectively
- Cut and fill & soil segregation — hazardous, non-hazardous and inert soils segregated before cart away
The Result
Despite challenging environmental and ecological factors, Dunton delivered a solid, compliant foundation for the new SEN school — in just 26 weeks.
Key Results
- Site successfully prepared for construction despite contamination and complex ecology
- Innovative solutions deployed, including prefabricated retaining walls and attenuation tanks
- Contaminated materials handled and disposed of in compliance with environmental regulations
- Solid foundation established for the SEN school, paving the way for successful completion
- Delivered within a tight 26-week programme
